Saw Palmetto
SAW PALMETTO For Hair Loss
Is Saw palmetto safe for woman to take for hair loss?
How much can be taken?
Saw palmetto may help prevent “male” pattern baldness. This type of hair loss results from the destruction of hair follicles by the androgen hormone DHT (dyhydratestosterone). As the name suggests “male” pattern baldness is related to men, however, it also affects woman with Oestrogen dominance. The fatty acid in saw palmetto help to block the formation of DHT and thus may help prevent hair loss in both men and women.
270 – 300mg daily is advised. These doses have been found to be safe in many studies. Saw palmetto is not recommended for women who are pregnant, nursing, trying to conceive or have any medical conditions linked to Oestrogen based cancer. It is also recommended that you discuss with a medical physician prior to taking any herbal medication.
Saw palmetto when broken down is known as Beta-Sitosterol.
Beta-Sitosterol is a molecule resembling cholesterol in both structure and solubility and has several known effects on the body. In particular Beta-Sitosterol decreases the DHT levels by inhibiting the 5-a-reductase’s action, which untreated is believed to be a key reason in male hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and suspected also to be a significant cause to other kinds of hair loss, ie. Alopecia areata, e.g..
Beta-Sitosterol can be extracted from different sources. It is widely
distributed in the plant kingdom and e.g. found in Nigella Sativa, Pecans, Curcurbita pepo (pumpkin seed), Pygeum africanum, cashew fruit and in Serenoa repens (the berries from Saw Palmetto) and soybeans, just to name a few.
There is no evidence to support that SAW PALMETTO is unsafe for women to take. By taking Arcon Tisane capsules in conjunction with saw palmetto, (Arcon Bio Spray, DHT inhibitor), both men and women suffering from “male” pattern balding will have a greater chance in preventing further baldness and regenerating healthy new growth.
